Who Gives to Elorza? Part 2: Construction and Real Estate

This is the second in a series of posts on contributors to Mayor Jorge Elorza’s campaign war chest. My analysis is based upon all contributions from 2013 through November 2, 2016, which totaled $1,332,555. Part 1 focused on lawyers, who together gave a total of $162,045, or 12 percent of all contributions to date. Here, I turn to the construction and real estate sector, including commercial and residential real estate, real estate investment, real estate development and property management. Together, employees of these firms and their relatives gave $147,135, or about 11 percent of all contributions to date.

These two sectors combined — lawyers and construction/real estate — have accounted for nearly one-quarter of all contributions to Mayor Elorza to date.

The contributions of relatives are not trivial. For example, while a managing director at Preston Giuliano Capital Partners gave a total $1,500, his relatives at the same home address gave an additional $2,750 for a combined contribution of $4,250. In total, relatives accounted for about 13% of the $147,135 in contributions attributed to firms in the construction and real estate sector.

The animated graph above shows the top 16 contributors, which gave a combined total of $80,965, or 55% of all contributions in the construction and real estate sector. (Check out this image if the animation doesn’t play.) Here are the details for the top 15: Cornish Associates, $13,600; Gilbane Building Co., $10,825; Residential Properties, $7,950; Dimeo Construction Co., $5,425;  Lisco Development, $4,575; Preston Giuliano Capital Partners, $4,250; Bliss Properties, $4,250; Hallmark Properties, $4,000; Orenstein Real Estate Services, $3,650; Warren Curtis, Real Estate Investor, $3,600; Walter L. Bronhard Real Estate, $3,500; Property Advisory Group, $3,300; Bilodeau Property Management, $3,040; Coast Realty, $3,000; Robbins Properties, $3,000; and Premier Land Development, $3,000.

These individuals and entities exercised their First Amendment rights to contribute to the political campaigns of their choice, subject to applicable state and federal laws. I make absolutely no claim that any individuals or entities sought or received political favors in return for their campaign contributions.
